Originating in the early 1980s in Spanish Town Jamaica, dancehall music emerged out of a reaction to the dominance of roots reggae. Initially, it was defined by selectors toasting to reggae riddims, soon progressing into a unique mix of digital sounds, driving beats, and often provocative lyrics.
